OROPESA BRIDGE

Oropesa (Toledo) | 2008 – 2009

The work on the conditioning of the CM-5102 road includes the rehabilitation and extension of a concrete bridge and ashlar masonry with four spans with a length of 12.35 m, 11.90 m, 11.67 m. and 12.12 meters (in the road forward direction) with 0.70 meters of keystone depth, an initial width of the platform of 6.10 m and a total width of the structure of 7.90 m.

The elements that make up the structure, in general terms, present a high degree of deterioration that is evident through numerous pathologies such as cracking processes and efflorescence.

The origin of most of these processes can be identified in the differential settlements that the foundations have suffered, especially that of the central pier, so the extension solution proposed must reinforce these elements.

It is necessary to prevent the undermining of the piers from progressing and therefore, a reinforcement of the foundations is proposed, which was carried out in two phases:

  1. Phase 1: Creation of a watertight enclosure with jet-grouting columns around the piers and abutments, which nullifies the undermining process.
  2. Phase 2: Injection under pressure into the previous enclosure to guarantee the filling of holes and pores existing under the piers. Jet-grouting columns confine injection.

It has also been necessary to reinforce the arches with the following actions:

  • Sealing of arches with resins to close the existing cracks and waterproofing treatment.
  • Emptying of the subsequent granular filling filled with lightly reinforced concrete
  • Laying of precast slabs

Once the operations on the foundations and the arches have been carried out, a rehabilitation action must be developed:

  • Elimination of plant species present in fissures of piers and abutments
  • Injection of concrete and masonry in cracks
  • Rehabilitation of degraded concrete
  • Waterproofing of arches by cementitious paint
