¨PABLO VI¨ PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid) | 2015 – 2020

The purpose of the walkway is to provide pedestrian and cyclist continuity to the Pablo VI Avenue, at its intersection on the M-503 highway in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid). The current intersection is resolved by an interchange with an upper roundabout on the highway, which is very inconvenient for pedestrian and cyclist traffic, forcing pedestrians to cross the branches of the interchange and go through very reduced sidewalks.

This is resolved with a walkway made up of a double-supported beam of variable depth over the M-503 interchange itself, which is accessed by side ramps parallel to the highway. It is designed with a length of 66.00 meters in a single span. The deck is made up of a metal box girder with a concrete top slab, forming a mixed structural section.

The deck has a variable depth from 1.10 meters at the abutments to 1.85 m in the center of the beam and a curved geometry in elevation to give it greater expressiveness, without ever exceeding the limit slope of 6%. This song variation is generated upwards, in an inverted fish belly, which gives it a more pleasant appearance. The walkway is very slender with a depth/span ratio of 1/36 in the center of the span. The useful width is 4.00 m, which is divided into 2.00 m for cyclists and 2.00 m for pedestrians. The minimum clearance of the walkway on the link lanes is 5.50 meters and 14.00 m on the underground M-503.

Two ramps have been planned for pedestrian access with a free width of 3.00 meters. The north ramp with three sections of ascent of 33.00 m each at 6% and the south ramp with two sections of 33.00 m and with the same slope. Horizontal landings have been arranged between the sections to comply with accessibility regulations.

The ramps are made up of a 30 cm deep white reinforced concrete slab, bounded between two 350 mm side plates that serve as lateral formwork. The slab is supported tangentially in a cantilevered manner on metal pillars every meter.

Due to its significant span for a double-supported span, an exhaustive calculation of accelerations produced by pedestrians on the walkway has been carried out following the United Kingdom annex to the Eurocode.
