TALAVERA CABLE-STAYED BRIDGE

Talavera de la Reina | 2005-2009

This 726 m long bridge has been designed to cross the Tagus River by the South Ring Road of Talavera de la Reina. The bridge is made up of two structures with different typologies. The main one is a cable-stayed bridge of 318 meters of length, which jumps with a single span the widest channel of the Tagus River. The other one is an access viaduct with a length of 408 meters, with two extreme spans of 36 meters and seven central spans of 48 m.

The cable-stayed bridge has a 36,00 m wide deck, with a double cable-stayed plan with cables transversely separated 28,00 meters that support the deck longitudinally every 7,00 meters and come together in a single pylon spaced 3,30 m.

This pylon is an inclined reinforced concrete mast with a height of 174 meters above the top face of the deck. This pylon is braced by a double plane of back-stay cables that balance the span through anchorage blocks that work by their own weight.

The deck and pylon are made of high-resistance white concrete between 70 and 80 Mpa, with very low thicknesses to minimize the structure’s own weight.

From the structural behaviour of the bridge, it is a single span with a flexible deck that makes the support cables collect the vertical load and carry it to the inclined pylon, where due to decomposition of forces, a part is transmitted by the guideline of the pylon and part is collected by the cables that transmit the load to the anchorage blocks, which act as true counterweights.

The bridge is a world record in the type of cable-stayed bridges with a single mast in high-strength prestressed concrete.

ESTUDIO AIA has carried out the Construction Project and has carried out Technical Assistance to the Construction Management of the Cable-stayed Bridge of Talavera de la Reina.

ESTUDIO AIA has fully developed, without the support of external offices, the calculation and control of the whole construction process, including the definition and monitoring of the stay-stressing process.
